W4YW: Winsome Weirdos, Questions for Your Marriage, & When Friends Read (Really) Bad Books

Wisdom For Your Weekend: your weekly installment of things we’ve been reading (and watching) around the web.

Video of the Week

Why Your Body is Amazing, AsapSCIENCE. This is alternately fascinating and disgusting. Testament both to God’s incredible design…and, rather morbidly, to the effects of the fall. What I (Chris) learned for the first time: the strength in your hand comes from your pinky; your nose can distinguish 1,000,000,000,000 different smells; you have roughly 3-5 pounds of bacteria in your body.

Articles of the Week

Mizzou and a More Excellent Way, Isaac Adams. If you’re into sports, you probably heard about the recent headlines coming out of the University of Missouri. The president (now former president) Tom Wolfe, was publicly censured for failing to address racism in recent events at the school. The pressure mounted, as one man began a hunger strike, and the entire Mizzou football team threatened to stop playing altogether until Wolfe resigned—which he did. Adams uses these recent events—and another, much more personal one—to reflect on the way that the Christian church is supposed to show a fractured world a racially united fellowship. It’s nothing short of miraculous.

10 Diagnostic Questions for Your Marriage, Kevin DeYoung. What’s the one key to a successful marriage? Ask couple who have been married for decades, and you’re liable to get some of the same answers—as well as a few oddball ones. The truth is, there isn’t one thing that holds a husband and wife together (unless that one thing is God! said Sunday School Sam). There are many features that make a marriage successful. DeYoung has given us 10 helpful questions to take the pulse of your marriage.

Winsome Weirdos, John Piper. The title alone is a wonderful piece of art. In this article, Piper takes a look at words from the Apostle Peter and applies them to our American context. Yes, our society is becoming increasingly out of step with the Christian faith. But that’s no reason to panic. This isn’t our culture. We’re not cool. And that’s perfectly fine. (Also noteworthy: Piper’s tweet about this article included the phrase, “HT: Apostle Peter.” Gotta love giving an apostle a Twitter “hat tip.”)

5 Ways to Respond When Your Friend Is Reading a Crazy Bad Book, Aaron Armstrong. I can resonate with Armstrong’s experience. You’re chatting with a friend, who excitedly tells you about this “great book they’re reading.” And when they tell you the title, you immediately know they’re ingesting straight garbage. So short of stealing their book and setting it on fire, how should we respond? Armstrong leads the way.

On The Lighter Side

Christian Mingle Inspector, John Crist. The more you’re aware of our peculiar Christian sub-culture, the more you’ll get this little ditty. (I will say, though, that while the idea here is a gag, there really should be some way of screening for Christian Mingle. Some straight-up creepers out there.)

Wisdom For Your Weekend is presented to you by Chris Pappalardo, with occasional guidance from J.D. Greear. This is our attempt to reflect Proverbs 9:9: “Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.”
