W4YW: Rape Culture, Two Facebooks, & Humble Leaders

Wisdom For Your Weekend: your weekly installment of what we’ve been reading (and watching) around the web.

Conference Resource of the Week

TGCW16 Conference Media. The Gospel Coalition Women’s Conference just released all the audio and video from their meeting last week in Indianapolis. Some excellent biblical teaching from sharp women of God (and from a man or two as well).

Articles of the Week

One Facebook, Two Worlds, Trevin Wax. This is an incredibly insightful reflection on why civil discourse seems impossible in our age. As Wax notes, our social media feeds are often echo chambers for us, reinforcing a self-righteous loop: “You are right. They are crazy. You are right. They are crazy.” We feel informed, but are actually more insulated than ever—left and right alike. So let’s break some boundaries and show the world a better way.

How Did Rape Become a Culture for Young Men? Barnabas Piper. The past few weeks have brought the idea of “rape culture” front and center. Piper laments that such a phrase could even exist, and looks at what might have led us to this horrible spot as a culture. Some of the causes are obvious. Others are a little subtler. All of them point to solutions that our world desperately needs, yet knows very little about.

Eight Passages Every Christian Should Memorize, Scott Slayton. When it comes to memorization, I (Chris) tend to prioritize two types—those that warm my heart and those that stab my heart. That is, if a passage is rich and immediately relevant upon a first read, it’s probably worth memorizing. But if a passage pricks my conscience, that’s also something I should store in my soul. Slayton’s list is an equal mix, and it’s tough to argue with what he chooses as his “Top 8.”

Three Features of the Humble Leader, Kevin DeYoung. If you’re a leader (or intend to be), you had better get comfortable with showing humility. Sure, you may not like it. Sure, it may be enormously difficult to achieve. But without humility, we set ourselves—and those we lead—up for colossal disappointment. “Humility isn’t about pretending to be lower than we are. It’s about realizing we are not as mighty as we think.”

On The Lighter Side

Voting Guide for 2016. Sounds about right.

Wisdom For Your Weekend is presented to you by Chris Pappalardo, with occasional guidance from J.D. Greear. This is our attempt to reflect Proverbs 9:9: “Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.”
