W4YW: Multi-Cultural Pioneers, Jesus Storybook Bible, & Justice Scalia

Wisdom For Your Weekend: your weekly installment of things we’ve been reading (and watching) around the web.

Poster of the Week

The “One Anothers” Of Scripture, Visual Theology. We don’t usually mention items for sale here on W4YW, but this guy was just too cool not to share. This is all of the “one another” passages of the New Testament, put into a graphic according to the number of mentions. You can order a full-sized poster (We just did!) in the link above.

Articles of the Week

Pioneers and Settlers: The Pains of Multi-Cultural Ministry, Steven Patton. Multi-cultural ministry has seen a rise in interest over the past few years. By and large, this is a great thing to see, as Christians from both majority white churches and predominantly minority churches are learning to live out the unity they have in Christ. But as the idea becomes more popular, we might expect it to easier. Patton has some wise words to keep us honest: pioneers get the arrows, settlers get the land.

Nine Things You Should Know About Justice Antonin Scalia (1936–2016), Joe Carter. On Saturday, Justice Scalia, age 79, passed away. A lot of helpful reflections on Scalia have been written in the past week, including a touching tribute to Scalia from his ideological opponent, Justice Ginsburg. But in case you aren’t familiar with Scalia, this list from Joe Carter helps get you acquainted with one of the titans of Supreme Court history.

The Story behind the Jesus Storybook Bible, Interview with Sally Lloyd-Jones, by Bronwyn Lea. C. S. Lewis once said that if a children’s book wasn’t fit for grown-ups to read, then it wasn’t fit for kids to read, either. The language must be simpler, of course, but the message must still be compelling, beautiful, and true. Sally Lloyd-Jones has accomplished that with her incredible resource, the Jesus Storybook Bible. If you have the book already, you’ll be fascinated by this inside look into Lloyd-Jones’ process. And if you don’t have the book, this interview will remedy that quickly.

Seven Ways to Keep Your Wife Beautiful for Life, Brad Hambrick. As a society, we place far too much emphasis on physical beauty, particularly for women. The Christian response to this shouldn’t be to pretend that beauty means nothing, but to re-capture the idea of beauty, to show the world what true attractiveness really is. Hambrick gives some very helpful tips for cultivating the kind of beauty that matters in the home.

On The Lighter Side

Windows 95 Launch. This video helps explain why a young Chris Pappalardo thought a career in computer science was attainable: similar dork status. This video is delightful.

Wisdom For Your Weekend is presented to you by Chris Pappalardo, with occasional guidance from J.D. Greear. This is our attempt to reflect Proverbs 9:9: “Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.”
